Who are we?
The CIE Penpals are the japanese part of a Japan/Finland penpal program started in September 1999.The penpals are students at the Center for International Education (CIE) in Kushiro, Japan who want improve their english while making friends with other english learners at our sister school in Finland.
The CIE Penpals group was started by Kayoko Horiuchi and Keith Vargo.
About Kushiro and Kauhava
Kushiro is a port city on the southeast coast of Hokkaido, with a population of roughly 200,000 people. It is right at the edge of the Kushiro marshlands, a sanctuary for red crested cranes and other endangered species
Kauhava is a town of about 8,000 people in Pohjanmaa, the midwest farming region of Finland. Kauhava was famous in the past for it's knife-fighting tough guys (hajyt) but now it is a quieter place famous for it's high quality knife-making industry.
